The rug size rules the calculator uses

Most living rooms need an 8×10 or 9×12 rug: big enough that the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it, with 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Bedrooms size the rug to the bed, and dining rugs need about 24 inches past the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

What size rug for your sofa, bed or table

Minimum standard sizes from the rules above. In a large room, going one size up usually looks better; in a small room, the calculator checks that the rug still leaves floor around it.

How to use the rug size calculator

  1. Pick the room and enter its length and width in feet (or switch to centimeters).
  2. Add the furniture: the sofa width and seating depth, the bed size, or the table size and shape.
  3. Choose how the furniture sits on the rug in a living room: front legs, all legs, or a smaller rug under the coffee table.
  4. Read the result: the smallest standard size that covers your furniture and still fits the room, plus every other size checked against both.

Common rug size mistakes

  • Too small in the living room. A 5×8 under an 84-inch sofa leaves the sofa floating; 8×10 is usually the minimum.
  • Wall to wall. A rug that touches the walls reads like carpet. Keep 12 to 18 inches of floor showing.
  • Dining rugs sized to the table only. Without 24 inches of overhang, chair legs catch on the rug edge every time someone sits down.
  • Forgetting the rug pad. Buy a pad about 1 inch smaller than the rug on each side so the edges lie flat.

Rug size questions

What size rug do I need for my living room?

For most living rooms an 8×10 rug works with a standard 84-inch sofa and the front legs on the rug. For seating groups wider than 9 feet or open-plan rooms, a 9×12 lets every leg sit on the rug.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8×10 rug placed under the lower two-thirds of a queen bed shows on both sides and past the foot. A king bed usually needs a 9×12.

How big should a dining room rug be?

At least 24 inches wider than the table on every side. For a 72×40-inch table that is 120×88 inches, so an 8×10 rug is the smallest standard size that works.

Should a rug go under the couch?

Usually only the front legs. Putting the front legs on the rug ties the sofa to the rest of the seating without needing a very large rug. In large rooms, all legs on the rug also works.

Is the rug size calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, and the share link stores your room in the page address.
